Nicholas Akerberg, a 28-year-old man, was arrested after entering Woburn District Court in military-style gear and allegedly pepper spraying court officials. Akerberg faced multiple charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and intimidation. During the incident, he also assaulted several individuals before a Taser was used to subdue him. Following the altercation, both Akerberg and several officers were hospitalized but subsequently released. The court ordered Akerberg to undergo a mental health evaluation, amidst serious concerns for the courtroom's safety and decorum expressed by prosecutors.
"I want to condemn today's attack on the Court, the Court staff and the Justice system in the strongest possible terms," Ryan said in a statement. "Courts are sacred, hallowed places."
Akerberg allegedly deployed pepper spray at multiple court officers, a Stoneham police officer, and an assistant district attorney, and assaulted several people before being subdued.
