The Rockies announced that outfielder Sam Hilliard has passed through waivers unclaimed and has been sent to Triple-A Albuquerque. Although he has the option to elect free agency due to his three years of major league service time, it is likely he will not, in order to keep his agreed $1MM salary for this year. Hilliard's presence in Triple-A provides depth for the Rockies' outfield, which currently features inexperienced players who may face struggles or injuries, allowing Hilliard to possibly return to the majors if needed.
Players with at least three years of major league service time can reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency.
If that comes to pass, Hilliard will provide the Rockies with a bit of extra outfield depth without taking up a roster spot.
