Red Sox RHP Lucas Giolito (hamstring) to open season on IL
Briefly

Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito will miss the start of the season after being placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain. Following an MRI, Red Sox manager Alex Cora made the announcement Thursday. Giolito, who signed a two-year, $38.5 million contract with the team earlier this year, had not pitched last season due to an elbow injury. This setback adds to the turmoil in the Red Sox's rotation as Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford are also sidelined with injuries. The season opens with a series against the Texas Rangers.
Giolito, 30, had an MRI on Wednesday after departing Tuesday's spring training start against the Philadelphia Phillies after one inning.
His loss comes just two days after Cora announced that right-hander Brayan Bello, last year's Opening Day starter, will not be ready for the start of the season due to shoulder soreness.
Giolito signed a two-year, $38.5 million contract with the Red Sox in January 2024 but missed all of last season with an elbow injury.
