He has a 3.58 ERA for his career, while playing for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds, Minnesota Twins, and St. Louis Cardinals. Last year with the Cardinals, Gray posted a 4.28 ERA on his way to going 14-8 over the course of the season. Gray's most recent success came in 2023 when he finished second in AL Cy Young voting, losing out to Yankees ace Gerrit Cole."
"The Red Sox will be giving up a young prospect in 22-year-old Brandon Clarke. Clarke pitched 38 innings with the Greenville Drive in Class A this year, finishing the year with a 4.03 ERA. Along with Clarke, Fitts made 10 starts for the Sox this season. He ended with a 2-4 record and a 5.00 ERA as he filled out Boston's bullpen."
The Boston Red Sox acquired veteran right-handed starter Sonny Gray and $20 million from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for left-handed prospect Brandon Clarke and right-hander Richard Fitts. Gray enters his 14th MLB season with a 3.58 career ERA and posted a 4.28 ERA with a 14-8 record last year for St. Louis; he finished second in AL Cy Young voting in 2023. The Cardinals sent $20 million to help cover Gray's salary, which was set at $35 million and is expected to be reworked to $31 million for one year. Clarke, 22, threw 38 innings at Class A with a 4.03 ERA, while Fitts made 10 starts for Boston this season, recording a 2-4 mark and 5.00 ERA. Gray likely will slot behind Garrett Crochet in Boston's 2026 rotation.
