"The Red Sox have been linked to some of the top hitters in free agency this offseason, like Pete Alonso, Kyle Schwarber, and Munetaka Murakami. Of course, they're also strongly in the mix to re-sign Alex Bregman. But they could improve their lineup via trade, too. In fact, The Boston Globe's Alex Speier recently reported that he suspects the Red Sox won't sign two of "premium" bats in free agency this offseason, but could look to add a complementary bat"
"Contreras is one of a handful of players whom insiders think the Cardinals could move on from this offseason, with The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo reporting that earlier in November. Former Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom now runs the Cardinals' baseball operations as well, so there could be a natural fit there for a trade as Bloom helped build Boston's farm system."
The Red Sox have been linked to free-agent hitters Pete Alonso, Kyle Schwarber, and Munetaka Murakami and remain in the mix to re-sign Alex Bregman. The club may not sign two "premium" bats and could instead add one complementary bat, potentially via trade. Willson Contreras is a possible trade target as insiders believe the Cardinals could move him this offseason. Former Red Sox executive Chaim Bloom now runs Cardinals baseball operations, creating a natural trade fit. Contreras, 33, has hit around .260 and at least 20 homers in five of six seasons. He moved from catcher to full-time first base, posted four Outs Above Average, and is under contract for two more seasons with $36.5 million owed and a $17.5 million team option for 2028.
