Guardians Release Pedro Avila
"Avila, now 29, has 146 1/3 big league innings under his belt. Most of that action was out of the Padres' bullpen but he was flipped to Cleveland a couple of years ago. At the end of the 2024 season, he had a 3.51 earned run average in his career. His 10.6% walk rate was a bit on the high side but he struck out 23.8% of batters faced and induced grounders on 49.2% of balls in play."
"He then signed with the Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball and got stretched out in Japan. He tossed 82 1/3 innings over 15 appearances with a 4.04 ERA. His 17.8% strikeout rate and 43.9% ground ball rate were both a few ticks lower than his MLB work but his walk rate dropped to 8.7%."
"The Cleveland bullpen has Hunter Gaddis and Shawn Armstrong projected for three leverage roles. Connor Brogdon seem likely to get spots and both are out of options. The Guards evidently didn't want to squeeze Avila in there, so he's been cut loose."
Pedro Avila, a 29-year-old right-handed pitcher with 146 1/3 major league innings, was released by the Cleveland Guards after not making their Opening Day roster. Avila has a career 3.51 ERA with a 23.8% strikeout rate and 49.2% ground ball rate, though his 10.6% walk rate is elevated. He pitched four scoreless innings in the 2024 postseason for Cleveland. After being removed from the roster in the 2024-25 offseason, Avila signed with the Yakult Swallows in Japan, posting a 4.04 ERA over 82 1/3 innings. He returned to Cleveland on a minor league deal but appeared in only six Cactus League games. The Guards' crowded bullpen with established options left no room for Avila, making him available to other teams before Opening Day.
