The Boston Planning and Development Agency has approved two significant residential projects in downtown, transitioning historic office buildings in the Financial District and North End into housing. The Financial District project will transform an 11-story building at 9 Arch St. into 110 rental units, of which 22 will be affordable. Concurrently, in the North End, 123 N. Washington St. will become 45 rental units, with seven being affordable units. Both projects will preserve the historic facades and lack parking facilities, aiming to enhance neighborhood vibrancy with residential life.
"It's exciting to see more and more of these residential conversions come before the board. It's a fantastic location and brings vibrancy and life - and the fact that there's a significant number of affordable units is terrific."
"I think this building has a fairly interesting history, and I hope that when you do the conversion, you find some ways of memorializing that."
