People We Meet: Martha Ehrenfeld is the perfect amount of nosy
In 2021, Carla Ehrenfeld announced plans to move back to the east coast to be near family, prompting Martha Ehrenfeld to request five more years. Ehrenfeld, age 60, served as longtime president of the Inner Sunset Park Neighbors association and had just completed renovation work on the Goldman Tennis Center in Golden Gate Park. She left in early June for a small town in Maine. A native New Yorker, she moved to San Francisco in 2002 and recalled running in Golden Gate Park and noticing unusual plants. She contrasted New York’s high cost of reaching nature with San Francisco’s proximity to it, and cited Berkeley Bowl’s produce variety, including mango salsa and mushrooms, as a reason she could not return. She also described early Inner Sunset life as less popular, with friends joking about “suburbs” and teasing about service, while she could sometimes hear a Pacific foghorn. She aimed to build community by getting to know neighbors and hosting big parties.
