Iconic Newburyport 'Pink House' to be demolished
Briefly

The Newburyport 'Pink House,' a beloved landmark, will be demolished after Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey failed to reach an agreement for its preservation. Advocacy efforts from local officials and community members were unable to prevent the decision. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which owns the property, purchased it in 2011, but environmental concerns, including significant asbestos presence, led to its decline. Despite its deteriorating condition, the Pink House remains an iconic symbol of the region, cherished by many, and its removal has prompted disappointment among local advocates.
Though the house will be removed, we remain committed to working together to evaluate additional steps we can take to ensure that the legacy of the Pink House will endure.
While I am both frustrated and disappointed that we couldn't find a way to save this iconic structure that is important in so many ways, I am deeply appreciative to everyone who worked tirelessly to achieve the common goal of preserving this structure.
