In Canada, the dream of home ownership is diminishing due to escalating housing prices that surpass salary growth, affecting generations from Gen X to Gen Z. A recent Ipsos poll revealed that 72% of non-homeowners have abandoned hopes of ownership, highlighting the severity of the housing crisis. Factors like low construction productivity and supply chain issues aggravate the problem. Additionally, there’s a pressing need to increase housing supply while mitigating carbon emissions, pointing towards mass timber as a sustainable solution.
However, with the cost of a house in Canada continuing to outpace salaries as each generation comes of age, from Gen X to Millennials to Gen Z, that dream has fizzled out just a little more.
Underpinning all of this is the fact that we need to boost our housing supply in a way that doesn't drive up carbon emissions.
...the answer may be staring us in the face: converting our most prolific renewable resource into a more sustainable form of housing with mass timber.
Most wood used to build furniture or house frames falls into the former category, which contributed more than $33 billion to Canada's economy in 2022.
