The Dutch government has decided to return 288 cultural objects unjustly acquired during the colonial era to Indonesia, emphasizing the importance of addressing historical wrongs.
Eppo Bruins noted that cultural objects were often looted or changed hands involuntarily during the colonial period, making their return a significant act of material redress.
Following the return of almost 500 items to Indonesia and Sri Lanka in July 2023, the latest restitution is a continuation of claims made by the countries of origin.
Jos van Beurden suggests that despite the current government's opposition to restitution, some decisions around colonial heritage might still proceed due to internal political dynamics.
