The area acquired its name as 'Back Bay' due to its location behind the original Boston settlement on Shawmut Peninsula. Back in the early 19th century, this tidal marshland was filled in a large-scale land reclamation project to expand the city's footprint.
The naming of Back Bay Boston dates back to the time it was a tidal bay. This bay was transformed into what we now know as an elegant neighborhood during the 19th century.
