Governor Maura Healey signed an executive order to establish the first-ever poet laureate in Massachusetts, aiming to serve as an ambassador for the arts. This move recognizes the state's rich poetic heritage, including figures like Phillis Wheatley and Emily Dickinson. The poet laureate will promote creative expression and inspire writers statewide. Although application processes are not yet open, an advisory committee will review candidates for nomination. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to celebrate poets’ contributions and strengthen the connection between the creative sector and the community.
Our administration is committed to honoring this legacy by celebrating the many contributions of poets to our state, including their ability to inspire future generations.
Massachusetts was one of three states - along with New Jersey and Pennsylvania - to not have an established state poet laureate.
We think that it's especially important now that we have ambassadors who are coming from the state, who are working to connect the creative sector throughout Massachusetts.
Applications have not yet opened for the honorary position, which will serve as an ambassador for the arts to promote creative expression.
