Concrete debris fell from the ceiling of Boston's Prudential Tunnel on Friday afternoon, impacting traffic and causing damage to multiple vehicles. Massachusetts Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver explained that a freeze-thaw cycle caused non-structural concrete to loosen and fall. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The incident led to a two-hour closure of the western lanes while crews inspected the site for safety. Gulliver stated that although such occurrences are rare, further inspections will be conducted in Boston-area tunnels as a precautionary measure.
The exact same weather action that causes potholes causes things like this. It's a very, very rare occurrence that we have a failure in a joint for anything overhead.
We're going to take whatever action is needed throughout the weekend to make sure that those systems are safe.
