Members of the Canton Fire Department performed the first whole blood transfusion in a prehospital setting in Massachusetts, saving a man's life after a car crash.
The successful administration of whole blood before the patient reached the hospital showcased the effectiveness of the new Field Transfusion Paramedic Program by the Canton Fire Department.
The program's development spanned three years and involved training in administering Low Titer O Whole Blood, described by the Red Cross as an 'all in one' therapy for bleeding patients.
Canton Fire Chief Wendell Robery emphasized the significance of this advancement in prehospital care and attributed the success to the dedication and collaboration between the departments involved.
