In Nigeria's rural communities of Mbiabet Esieyere and Mbiabet Udouba, solar mini-grids are revolutionizing electricity access. The proposal from Prado Power met skepticism initially, as many residents had never considered solar energy an option. However, once the solar panels were installed in 2022, families experienced a reliable power source, improving their quality of life and reducing costs associated with kerosene lamps and diesel generators. The shift towards solar is part of a gradual transition in Nigeria, which currently lags in renewable energy adoption despite being a sunny country.
Before the installation of the mini-grid, villagers relied on kerosene lamps for light. Now, they are amazed at the reliable electricity that solar power provides.
Solomon Andrew Obot remarked on the disbelief at the possibility of solar energy, stating, 'We didn't imagine that something [like this] can exist,' highlighting the initial skepticism.
The project, executed by Prado Power, served 180 households, drastically improving their electricity supply and reducing dependence on expensive diesel generators.
Reflective of the broader trend, solar power remains underutilized in Nigeria, contributing only 3 percent of its total electricity generation despite ample sunlight availability.
