Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast has made significant layoffs, affecting 90% of the Sigil team responsible for the virtual tabletop experience for Dungeons & Dragons. Despite its launch in early access on February 28, 2025, the app was met with mixed reviews for its limitations and technical issues. Internal assessments suggest that management's disinterest and misunderstandings regarding the app's nature contributed to its challenges. Currently, only a small team remains to support Sigil as it continues to serve subscribers of D&D Beyond.
Today, approximately 30 talented developers (90 percent of the team) were laid off from the Sigil (virtual tabletop) team at Wizards of the Coast, including yours truly.
Management at Hasbro were reportedly uninterested and 'constantly moving goalposts,' which may have contributed to the challenges faced by the Sigil team.
Early reviews of the app found it to be both limited and a little broken, indicating potential issues from its launch.
There may have been a fundamental misunderstanding over what Sigil was: Hasbro didn't know the difference between a video game and the VTT app.
