In a recent interview, Nightreign's director Junya Ishizaki discussed the game's focus on three-player and solo experiences, noting that the duo configuration was overlooked during development. Players can engage in duo play but will be paired with a random third player. Ishizaki emphasized the challenge of balancing these options, particularly for solo players, which necessitated prioritizing trios in development. Despite this, he expressed remorse over the omission and indicated that they are considering post-launch support for those who prefer to play as a duo.
The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that.
We did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed.
This is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well.
Trios action is at the core of Nightreign, so that's gotta be the main focus, especially when it came to balancing.
