The Embraer 190 aircraft was carrying 62 people en route from Baku to Grozny when it crashed off the Kazakh coast, killing at least 38.
Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev confirmed the death toll, noting that both pilots were among the deceased and many passengers are injured.
Investigators are looking into a bird strike as a contributing factor to the crash, which occurred after the plane diverted from its route because of fog.
Out of the 62 passengers and crew, 32 survived, with many requiring hospitalization and described as being in critical condition after the accident.
