In Morgan Hill, California, a hate crime directed at an elderly Muslim prompted local leaders to denounce Islamophobia. During the month of Ramadan, community members experienced verbal and physical assault from an individual expressing hatred towards Muslims. Zahra Billo of CAIR highlighted the nature of the incident, and members like Noshaba Afzal provided support to victims. The Morgan Hill Police are investigating the occurrence, which could qualify as a hate crime, stressing community solidarity and intolerance for such acts.
"It is a holy month for Muslims, during which we fast from sun up to sundown, and we gather every night for congregational prayers," said Zahra Billo, executive director of CAIR San Francisco Bay Area.
"As they exited the building, they were confronted by a man who verbally assaulted several of them and then battered an elderly member. In doing so, he expressed his hate for Muslims and Palestinians," Billo said.
"Just letting her know it's not acceptable. It's not something that anyone should ever have to endure," said Noshaba Afzal, a member of South Valley Islamic community.
The department said the case is still actively being investigated to the fullest extent of the law, an investigation they said could include hate crime violations.
