Sharp rise recorded in landmine casualties in 2023, warns report
Briefly

Civilians, including children, represent 84 percent of landmine casualties worldwide, with Myanmar seeing the highest rates in 2023. The global casualty numbers rose significantly from last year, totaling more than 5,700 incidents.
The report highlights that landmines are indiscriminate weapons by design, which means casualties can occur among anyone near a triggered mine. Children accounted for 37 percent of the civilian casualties, underscoring the devastating impact on innocent lives.
Countries such as Myanmar, Russia, and North Korea continue to lay new landmines despite international bans. These nations, along with major powers not party to the Mine Ban Treaty, maintain ongoing trends of landmine deployment.
Although the Landmine and Cluster Munition Monitor reported 5,700 casualties in 2023, it's suggested that actual figures could be much higher as not all deaths and injuries are documented.
