UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell highlighted the severe impact of the ongoing drought in the Amazon, stating, 'We are witnessing the devastation of an essential ecosystem that families rely on. Many children are left without access to adequate food, water, health care and schools.' This dire situation emphasizes the need for urgent action to mitigate climate crises affecting vulnerable populations.
The UN agency warns that the resulting food insecurity in the Amazon has increased child malnutrition risks and disrupts access to drinking water, leading to a higher incidence of infectious diseases among children. Russell urges, 'We must mitigate the effects of extreme climate crises to protect children today and future generations.'
As reported, over 1,700 schools and 760 medical clinics in the Brazilian Amazon have been closed or rendered inaccessible due to severe drought. Similarly, in Colombia and Peru, many schools and clinics are struggling. UNICEF states, 'The health of the Amazon affects the health of us all,' urging leaders to step up climate financing efforts.
