Amnesty International has issued a stern warning regarding the risks Abdul Rahman al-Qaradawi faces if extradited to the UAE, emphasizing concerns over human rights violations. They argue that his detention is linked to his critical comments against UAE, Egyptian, and Saudi authorities, fundamentally rooted in his right to freedom of expression. International human rights norms safeguard individuals from persecution for exercising their viewpoints, making this case particularly significant in the context of ongoing state repression in the region.
Sara Hashash, the deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasized that critics of state policies must not be subjected to punitive measures. She stated, 'Criticising the authorities is not a crime.' The organization is particularly concerned about possible enforced disappearances and torture if al-Qaradawi is deported, claiming these outcomes are not mere hypotheticals but rather a clear risk rooted in his past opposition to repressive regimes.
