The Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) is calling for a Department of Justice investigation into ICE for misrepresenting racial data, intentionally classifying Black immigrants as white.
BAJI revealed that ICE inaccurately classifies Black immigrants; for instance, only 50% of Gambians are labeled as Black, contrary to 98% identification according to the American Community Survey.
Despite BAJI's efforts to reveal racial biases, the Homeland Security Department claims it does not collect racial data, contradicting findings from BAJI's Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.
ICE's manipulation of race data to categorize immigrants as white raises concerns about accountability for the disparate treatment of Black immigrants, according to BAJI.
