A racist message spray-painted on the fence of a home in San Leandro is under investigation as a hate crime. The new Black homeowner, Sonia Reed, expressed her devastation at the attack, feeling targeted due to her race. Her neighbor, Van Turner, who is also Black, confirmed he has seen no prior racism in the area. Reed, who has overcome significant personal challenges to become a first-time homeowner and active community member, shared her distress and spoke about her recovery organization. The sheriff's department condemned the act and emphasized their seriousness towards hate crimes.
"It's sad. It's sad. She worked hard for what she has," said Turner.
"I was in shock. Am I really being attacked based on the color of my skin?" said Reed.
"We take hate crimes very seriously. This is uncalled for, this type of behavior," said the sheriff's department.
"I come from homelessness, institutions, jails, drug abuse. I founded an organization... so people can come and heal and recover," said Reed.
