Leonard Glenn Francis, a former defense contractor, was sentenced to 15 years for orchestrating a significant bribery scandal involving multiple US Navy officers, highlighting widespread corruption.
US District Judge Janis L Sammartino ordered Francis to pay $20 million in restitution to the Navy, in addition to a $150,000 fine and forfeiting $35 million in ill-gotten gains.
Francis initially fled to Venezuela after cutting off his GPS ankle monitor while under house arrest, triggering an international manhunt before his eventual capture by Venezuelan authorities.
Despite his severe health condition, Francis's escape and subsequent arrest show the lengths to which he went to evade justice, complicating a case that has drawn significant media attention.
