Over 100 bereaved families in the UK are uniting to initiate a groundbreaking class action lawsuit against police and government entities over fatalities involving officers since 1971. Announced during the People's Tribunal on Police Killings, this legal initiative seeks compensation and accountability for the families affected by police-related deaths, with evidence presented to international experts. Activist Ken Fero emphasizes the need for collective action, noting the silence suffered by numerous families over decades. The initiative records 3,000 police-related deaths since 1971, contrasting starkly with only four convictions of officers for such incidents.
I think it's quite revolutionary what we're trying to do. There has never been a class action of this kind done in the UK before, there hasn't been a call-up like this one before.
We've explored all avenues. We've done campaigns. We've written letters. We've met with prime ministers, Home Office secretaries, everybody that you would think. Something needs to change.
