Dame Elizabeth Anionwu honoured with plaque
Briefly

Professor Dame Elizabeth Anionwu is set to unveil a plaque at the Brixton Blood Donor Centre, which aims to encourage blood donations from black communities to better support those with sickle cell disease. This condition, which disproportionately affects black individuals, is recognized as the UK's fastest growing genetic disorder. Dame Elizabeth emphasized the crucial role of black blood donors in alleviating patients' suffering and called for increased appointments at the new centre, developed with input from local leaders and community members, aiming for over 1,000 weekly donors.
We still rely on the generosity of blood donors from the Black community to make a lifesaving difference.
When I became the country's first specialist sickle cell nurse counsellor in the 1970s, the disease was not very well known or understood.
The centre was developed in collaboration with community leaders, local businesses and residents to encourage more donors from black Caribbean and black African heritage.
The centre hopes to welcome more than 1,000 donors a week.
