A DC judge has awarded the trademarks of the Proud Boys to the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church, preventing the group from using its name. This decision allows the church to potentially collect any profits from Proud Boys merchandise sales. The church's lawsuit stemmed from the group's destruction of Black Lives Matter signs during a rally in 2020. Despite a $1 million judgment against the Proud Boys in 2023, they did not pay, prompting this ruling, which Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio has criticized as a "betrayal of justice."
The ruling means that the far-right group can no longer use its name, and clears the way for the church to try to seize any money that the Proud Boys might make by selling merchandise.
The Proud Boys were ordered to pay the church more than $1 million in 2023 but the group failed to do so, leading to Monday's ruling.
