The opening stage of the Tour of Algarve faced significant controversy when a majority of the riders took a wrong turn just before the finish. Following the lead car, the peloton ended up on a detour, confusing spectators as they witnessed two races unfolding. Despite Italy's Filippo Ganna celebrating an apparent victory, the race organizers dismissed the results, deeming that the integrity of the competition was compromised. Consequently, no winner's ceremony was held, and the peloton reset for the next stage, emphasizing the mishap's impact on the event.
No winner's ceremony took place, the podium in Lagos was left empty and the 192.2km ride from Portimao was all in vain.
Given what happened, the College of Commissaires decided to cancel the stage because they considered that sporting truth did not prevail in the end.
