In our recent wind tunnel test of 11 WorldTour level superbikes, we found that there is very little measurable difference between bikes at the top end of the sport.
With the advent of this aerodynamic plateau, new frontiers are being forged in the hardware landscape nonetheless, as rolling resistance of tyres presents the next frontier for gains.
All else being equal, the rolling resistance of tyres on tarmac is the second greatest retarding force acting on a cyclist, where significant improvements can be achieved.
The forces at play with rolling resistance are much smaller than aerodynamic drag, but the differences in performance potential are still worth exploring.
