Destination: Crested Butte, Colorado
Briefly

"I saw Crested Butte for the first time and had no doubt it was a place I never wanted to leave," says mountain bike historian Mike Horn. His film "Born from Junk" narrates the outlaw origin of mountain biking, rooted in necessity and counterculture. In the 60s and 70s, new pioneers joined miners and farmers; ski bums and hippies embraced biking for leisure, leading to the creation of the "klunker" bikes, a mix of parts and fun."
In the '60s and '70s, Crested Butte saw a wave of counterculture pioneers. With pothole-filled streets, biking became a practical choice. Al Maunz and Steve Baker started building klunker bikes for their friends, mixing parts from Schwinn cruisers and enjoying the freedom biking offered. This thriftiness and enjoyment marked the birth of mountain biking, turning Crested Butte into an essential part of its history."
