At Gravel Hill Primary School, cars frequently intrude into designated cycle lanes, endangering both cyclists and children. Cyclist Loretta Brackstone noted that parents let children exit vehicles directly onto busy roads, highlighting a significant safety risk. Although she suggested bollards to protect the cycle lane, Bexley Council provided a dismissive response. Council head Andrew Bashford recognized the problem yet cited limited resources for enforcement. He worries that measures like bollards might result in further complications for traffic. Nevertheless, a trial with temporary barriers is on the horizon as a potential solution.
"It's just madness. If a child gets out on the wrong side, they're stepping straight into fast-moving traffic."
"They told me it doesn't matter because it's only twice a day, but that's twice every day when an accident could happen."
