Bicycle advocates in San Mateo are fighting to preserve bike lanes on Humboldt Street, a busy corridor near schools. Activist Allison MacQueen became more involved after witnessing a student’s near-fatal accident. While a study revealed that 76% of Humboldt residents felt negatively impacted by the bike lanes—primarily due to the removal of 170 parking spaces—the city is exploring alternatives. Options include restoring parking and merging bike lanes or outright removal. Advocates argue for keeping the lanes to promote cycling and minimize costs for taxpayers already burdened by infrastructure issues like potholes.
We have no place to park in the evening. It's chaos. I've heard of people fighting over parking spaces. Not only were the 170 parking spaces removed, but we're losing even more due to the daylighting laws.
Safe streets advocate Mike Swire is calling for the cheapest option: keeping the bike lanes as is. We've got so many other uses of the money. I just don't think taxpayers want to spend money.
