This masterful staging of Puccini's masterpiece hasn't dated
Briefly

Andrei Serban's 40-year-old production of Puccini’s Turandot continues to captivate audiences with its stunning visuals and powerful performances. Choreographer Kate Flatt’s inspiration from t'ai chi and karate gives a unique flair to the staging set in Peking's Imperial Palace. The strategic placement of the chorus enhances the auditory experience while the varied costumes reflect the era authentically. Notable performances by Seokjong Baek and Sondra Radvanovsky as the lead couple, along with Anna Princeva’s standout portrayal of Liu, reinforce the melodrama's gripping nature, proving the production’s lasting relevance and appeal.
Anna Princeva, as the slave-girl Liu, steals the show in both her big arias with a gloriously sweet sound.
Seokjong Baek's sound has a glowing warmth, while Sondra Radvanovsky's voice cuts heroically through everything.
The siting of the huge chorus round the back of the stage, as though inside a giant drum, allows their sound to come at us with massive force.
Andrei Serban's staging of the story of a cold-hearted princess and her would be suitor is visually stunning.
