The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reported that one in five people in Gaza are facing starvation, with an increasing risk of famine as a result of a two-month aid blockade by Israel. Legal experts say this blockade amounts to "cruel collective punishment" and violates international law. Current estimates indicate that by September, almost half a million people could be categorized under severe food insecurity. The FAO described the situation as unprecedented, while Israeli officials continue to argue that the problems are caused by Hamas mismanaging aid.
One in five Gazans are facing starvation, while the entire territory is confronted with a critical risk of famine that is projected to worsen in the coming months.
According to the data published by the IPC, at least 244,000 people - or 12 percent of the population - were classified as living in IPC Phase 5, which is the most severe level of food insecurity.
