Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Odesa faced significant threats, including a rocket strike on the Museum of Western and Eastern Art. Rather than suffering total loss, museum director Igor Poronyk successfully evacuated key artworks to protect them from damage. However, initial storage conditions in Lviv were inadequate. In response, a collaborative effort led by Ralph Gleis and supported by Claudia Roth in Berlin aimed to showcase these artworks, culminating in the "From Odesa to Berlin" exhibition set to open in January 2024, highlighting cultural resilience and solidarity amidst adversity.
It was only much later that I saw the conditions under which they were stored. The conditions were not optimal.
It is very important to me to help my Ukrainian colleagues. Cultural assets, Ukrainian cultural assets, are being actively destroyed and annihilated.
