Conductor Daniel Barenboim says he's been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease
Briefly

Conductor Daniel Barenboim has publicly shared his Parkinson's disease diagnosis, acknowledging the impact on his health and performances. Previously notable for canceling various engagements, including a planned production in Berlin, Barenboim expresses intentions to uphold his responsibilities with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. He highlights the orchestra's significance to him and his dedication to its future, while also focusing on managing his health. Despite challenges, he aims to continue conducting when possible and support the next generation of conductors.
I am planning to maintain as many of my professional commitments as my health permits, he wrote. As ever, I consider the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra my most important responsibility.
I will continue to conduct the Divan whenever my health allows me to. At the same time, I will take an active role in ensuring that the Divan has the opportunity of working with excellent conductors going forward.
I have been navigating this new reality of mine and my focus is on receiving the best available care.
Since 2022, he has appeared more frail, canceling scheduled performances that included a new production of Wagner's Ring Cycle in Berlin.
