Thousands of protesters have organized mass demonstrations across 40 cities in Spain, advocating for solutions to an escalating housing crisis. Led by tenants' rights groups, activists accuse the government of treating housing as a commercial venture. Key demands include substantial rent reductions, a ban on evictions of vulnerable families, and curbing the rise of tourist accommodations. This marks a significant moment, being the first synchronized protest of its kind in a decade, with origins traced back to the Canary Islands' calls for sustainable tourism and adequate housing.
This demonstration comes after many months of talks; we wanted it to be decentralised, for everyone to come out at the same time and paralyse the state. The idea is that it will be the first day of a new wave of protests.
Fear has changed sides: we are not going to demand more changes; we are organised and we have a plan against rentierism.
