VTA has initiated legal action against striking workers, which follows a breakdown in contract negotiations. The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 265, representing over 1,500 transit workers, went on strike after rejecting VTA's proposed wage increase of 9% over three years, as it failed to meet their request for a total of 18%. This strike is disrupting services across the community, prompting VTA to act in order to reinstate normal operations. The union asserts that better wage raises are necessary to cope with the high cost of living in Silicon Valley.
"This strike is having an overwhelming impact on the community, and we are working on all efforts to support our riders getting to work, school, medical appointments, and events," VTA General Manager Carolyn Gonot said.
ATU Local 265 President Raj Singh previously told San José Spotlight the increases are necessary to keep up with Silicon Valley's rising cost of living.
