Austin Water loses over 8 billion gallons annually due to leaks and inefficiencies, amounting to almost $12 million in losses from treatment and metering inaccuracies.
An analysis by Black & Veatch found that Austin Water's total losses have nearly doubled since 2010, with an Infrastructure Leakage Index of 4.1, exceeding the acceptable limit.
The utility plans to implement district metering areas to improve pressure management and is set to pilot two areas expected to go live by the end of 2024.
Recommendations from the review include expanding the replacement program for underperforming water lines and enhancing the precision of production meters at treatment plants.
