Briefly

The City of Austin's Living Streets Program aims to enhance community interaction by closing roads to through traffic, promoting walking, biking, and rolling activities. Initially birthed from pandemic needs under the Healthy Streets initiative, the program has grown in popularity, inspiring residents to create safer recreational environments. With recent federal funding, the initiative now supports 37 streets, fostering vibrant community events and less vehicular congestion. Residents are seeing positive outcomes such as increased foot traffic, social events, and a stronger sense of neighborhood camaraderie.
There is less traffic, and it's slower. Dogs, bikers, strollers, neighbors in wheelchairs, more of them are out, and more often… uncomplicated and low-stress ways to build community.
The overwhelming popularity of Healthy Streets revealed an answer to more profound needs, and in 2021, Council opened applications for its new Living Streets Program.
