"Happy February and happy Black History Month! Happy Valentine's Day too, of course! While this month always reminds me of romantic and platonic love, the featured exhibitions have reminded me of a different sort of love - love for the human experience and existential journey we are all on. Happiness, grief, loss, meaning, and human connection are all universal and inevitable experiences that pop up in this month's exhibits in different ways."
"Cara Levine's new show, Without End: Recent Work on Grief, continues her project of social engagement based artmarking with themes of absence, empathy, and equity. The exhibition offers a space for loss, memory, and healing to intersect. The site-specific installation Silverlinings, provides viewers with a sandbox and invites them to trace an image of grief or loss in the sand. Making grief and loss physical and tactile rather than obtuse and abstract offers opportunity for healing and restoration."
Pursuit of Happiness at Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland centers on happiness with work by Southern Oregon University's creative staff and faculty. Without End: Recent Work on Grief at the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education by Cara Levine addresses absence, empathy, and equity through social-engagement art, including the site-specific Silverlinings sandbox that invites tactile tracing of grief and mediates Levine's loss of her childhood home in the 2025 Los Angeles fires. Blackfish Gallery and Waterstone Gallery confront political threats, uplift cultural heritage, and promote Black resilience. Carnation Contemporary's Lost Lake investigates human connection to nature.
