Vincent Valdez on making art that connects communities
Briefly

Vincent Valdez: Just a Dream... showcases the artist's two-decade career through a major exhibition co-organized by CAMH and Mass Moca. Valdez, acclaimed for his detailed and intense imagery, addresses social issues affecting marginalized communities, particularly the Mexican American experience. His notable works, including The Strangest Fruit series, tackle themes of violence and systemic oppression with a haunting realism, making significant strides in highlighting the plight of marginalized bodies in contemporary society. The exhibition features an array of his work, ranging from paintings to videos, reflecting his evolution and storytelling prowess.
Vincent Valdez has forged a career as a storyteller and fearless translator of marginalised American experiences, using allegory and confrontational figuration to address the failures and triumphs of contemporary US society.
Nowhere in his oeuvre is this more evident than in his The Strangest Fruit series from 2013, a suite of nine paintings depicting Mexican and Mexican American men suspended from invisible nooses.
