Two new art spaces are set to open in Venice, the San Marco Art Centre (SMAC) and the Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation. SMAC, opening on May 7 in St Mark's Square, will focus on contemporary themes in art, architecture, fashion, technology, and film, featuring 16 galleries restored by architect David Chipperfield. The Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation will occupy a historic building in Dorsoduro. Both venues aim to innovate in their exhibition approaches, relying on temporary shows and collaborations with international curators and institutions.
"We are a spontaneous and experimental organisation, testing traditional models of arts institutions and exhibition making," say the founders in a statement.
"SMAC does not sell artworks; it does not have a permanent collection and will have a programme solely dedicated to temporary exhibitions conducted developed by SMAC in collaboration with international institutions and curators."
