"Before I had even shut the car door, Ferriso was standing there in a long raincoat, smiling with his hand out for a shake. He had been returning to the museum after lunch and happened to see me. But the fact that we immediately dove into the scheduled Rothko Pavilion walk-through seemed appropriate, because Ferriso has been preparing for this opening for nearly his entire two-decade tenure, and was understandably eager for people to see it."
"Shortly after the Rothko's November 20 opening, Ferriso will be leaving Portland for Texas to become director of the Dallas Museum of Art. He acknowledged the bittersweet feeling. "Another six months after it opened would maybe be more fun," Ferriso said. But in Dallas, he will oversee a similar challenge: renovation and expansion of a historic, architecturally significant building. "It too is very insular," Ferriso added."
Brian Ferriso greeted a visitor outside the Portland Art Museum on a rainy Wednesday, then immediately began a walk-through of the new Rothko Pavilion. Ferriso prepared for the Pavilion during nearly his entire two-decade tenure and expressed eagerness for public viewing. He will leave Portland shortly after the Pavilion's November 20 opening to become director of the Dallas Museum of Art, where he will face a similar expansion and renovation challenge. Ferriso instructed designers Vinci Hamp and Hennebery Eddy to design the Pavilion to yield to Pietro Belluschi's original museum building, maintaining scale and a respectful contemporary conversation.
