Following the devastating wildfires in January, artist Jeffrey Sugishita returned to see his burned home and decided to create anew. He photographed himself amidst the rubble, symbolizing resilience in the face of loss. His self-portrait, featuring a helmet of flowers, is part of a collective art exhibit showcasing nearly 100 artists affected by wildfires. The exhibit underscores the impact of climate change as it opened amidst flooding, highlighting the struggles of artists from established to emerging backgrounds. Curator Aram Moshayedi aims to foster community and inclusivity through this unique showcase.
"I told myself: I'm going to make something new out of this." Sugishita's resilience captures a hopeful response to destruction, embodying the creativity born from loss.
"It felt really necessary to create a context where people who have been displaced could converge together...in an exhibit that could be as far-reaching and inclusive as possible." Moshayedi emphasizes the importance of community for displaced artists.
