Su Yu-Xin's artistic journey began with a realization in art school that most painters relied on a limited selection of high-end oil paints. To break free from this constraint, she started crafting her paints from natural sources, leading to a collection of over 200 pigments derived from stones, minerals, and shells. This method not only enriches her works with vibrant hues but also infuses them with the stories of each material. Now, as she prepares for her first solo museum exhibit, her approach reflects a commitment to innovation and the exploration of nature's colors in her landscapes.
"It's really scary... It's like all the top chefs in the world shop from the same grocery store," reflects Su Yu-Xin on the limited palettes available to artists, sparking her journey into creating her own pigments.
"A decade later, creating my own pigments has become a central part of my work… The histories of the materials I use are part of each painting I create," says Su, emphasizing her creative evolution.
