"The restoration will be undertaken by the Midwest Art Conservation Center in Minneapolis and will focus on the cleaning, consolidation and lining of the tapestry. The tapestry will first receive wet cleaning, after which fabric leaders will be hand-stitched to the vertical sides."
The Minneapolis Institute of Art has been awarded €25,000 from the Tefaf Museum Restoration Fund to restore The Meeting of Dante and Virgil tapestry. This tapestry, created around 1547-49, is one of the largest in the museum's collection and the only early Medicean tapestry outside Italy. It has not been displayed for over 60 years due to its poor condition. The restoration will be conducted by the Midwest Art Conservation Center, focusing on cleaning, consolidation, and lining, with plans for public display after completion this summer.
