"Come May, London's Design Museum is revisiting NIGO's three-decade career in an exhibition that unpacks his life, career, and footprint. More than 700 objects will be gathered-the bulk from the man's personal archive-including vintage clothing, early drawings, childhood artifacts, and runway looks. Together, they'll chart the designer's trajectory from Tokyo's punk rock scene to his seminal label A Bathing Ape to his current role as artistic director of Kenzo."
"That same decade also saw NIGO form the punk tribute band Tokyo Sex Pistols with his classmates at Bunka Fashion College. The group's members would emerge as Harajuku power players: among them, Jun Takahashi would go on to found Undercover and Hiroshi Fujiwara would launch Fragment. NIGO, meanwhile, would set up his streetwear label A Bathing Ape (BAPE) in 1993."
The Design Museum in London will stage NIGO's first major retrospective outside Japan in May. More than 700 objects from NIGO's personal archive will be displayed, including vintage clothing, early drawings, childhood artifacts, and runway looks. The exhibition traces his path from Tokyo's punk rock scene through founding A Bathing Ape in 1993 to his current role as artistic director of Kenzo. The presentation opens with a replica of his 1980s teenage bedroom, showcasing American pop-culture influences. The retrospective highlights his influence on brand collaborations and the blending of streetwear with luxury, and includes 25 hand-thrown ceramics from his pottery practice.
